The Susquehanna Sojourn is an educational and awareness raising event conceived and organized by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay to educate citizens about the River’s connection to the Bay. The Sojourn involves a group of canoeists and kayakers paddling a segment of the Susquehanna River each year, camping on her shores and interacting with local towns and villages, until we paddle right into the Chesapeake Bay. The Susquehanna River is the largest tributary and provides about half of the freshwater to the Chesapeake Bay. Over the course of the Sojourn, families, scouts and individuals partner with local residents in river-related service projects and activities The Sojourn receives prominent media coverage and is a unique and powerful tool for promoting environmental stewardship and inspiring conservation of our natural resources. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay founded the Susquehanna Sojourn 18 years ago, starting at the beginning: the headwaters of the river at Cooperstown. Each year, Sojourners paddle a different segment of the river until we make it the Chesapeake Bay. In 2008, we return to the Corning, NY headwaters of the Chemung River and paddle downstream to the North Branch of the Susquehanna. For more information about the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and our work in New York or throughout the watershed, check out our website at: This program was made possible through an Explore New York grant from the New York State Department of Economic Development Division of Tourism. The nature of geocaching is such that trails, locations and game pieces are often at the mercy of the elements and the non-geocaching public. All participants must understand that geocaching, as well as hiking, biking, paddling and other outdoor activities involve risk to both persons and property. There are many variables including, but not limited to, weather, fitness level, terrain features, and outdoor experience that must be considered prior to seeking a cache. Be prepared for your journey and be sure to check the current weather conditions before heading out on your Sojourn. In no way shall the NYS Dept of Economic Development Division of Tourism, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Chemung County Chamber of Commerce, Steuben County Conference and Visitors Bureau nor any agent, officer, employees or volunteers be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, or consequential damages arising out of or in any way connected with the participation of the Sojourn Geocache Trail or any information provided by this project. We would like to extend a very special Thank You to the volunteer cache placers who helped to get this trail under way; Adamsduo, Bergie201, ferret123, kodi&barney, MLSimons, Ol'Bluesguy, Photobug6570, rikilker, TheSayreShellie, and yurtles. |
